Piry was born in Czechoslovakia, one of 6 children. She’s a Holocaust survivor and was in Auschwitz for 1 1/2 years. She lived in Budapest, Hungary with her sister for 2 years during the early years of the war, sent there by her mother to escape, but was captured and taken to Auschwitz when visiting her mother during the Jewish holidays. Only two sisters and a brother survived the war. She speaks 5 languages: Yiddish, Czech, Hungarian, English and German. Three years ago, she returned to Auschwitz with her children and there her son-in law said Kaddish for her parents and siblings who perished. This project has brought her sister, who she had once lost and then found again, and who now lives in Miami Beach, back to her, in a way. |
