Marie is truly a wonderful person. To sit in her presence or in the company of others who know her well is to learn a great lesson about life. It is in giving, not in taking, that life’s greatest pleasures are reached. The knowledge she has passed on to her family and to those she has met through the Jewish Museum of Australia has gone a long way to helping promote togetherness in the community.
When Marie suggested we go on a tour of the Museum with her we thought it would be the perfect narrative backbone for the portrait. As we followed her around the venue, she spoke about the different aspects of Jewish life in Australia with such passion and honour. Between scenes of her talking to us about the history and customs of the Jewish people in this country we gathered footage of her at home speaking alone or in the company of her husband Phillip, as well as a discussion amongst members of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren about their Bubba. It was obvious within the first minutes of meeting her descendants that the lessons she had passed on had been absorbed like a sponge. While we didn’t want to make the portrait as a testimonial it was hard to leave out stories about her that continued to give a glowing appraisal. We decided to finish the documentary with a song sung by her husband Phillip about luck. While the portrait is of Marie, Phillip has played an important role in her life and in the lives of their offspring.
Marie and her family were very open to ideas and suggestions as to what the portrait could resemble. They opened their homes and hearts to us and we are very thankful to them and hope that the film goes some way to portraying who Marie is as a person and a role model for others.
