HANIA MAYER

Hania was born in Lodz, Poland in 1922. She attended a religious girl’s school from the age of 6 until she was 12, where she learned Polish, Yiddish and Hebrew.  In High School she learned German and Latin. She lived there with her father, mother and 3 older brothers until Hitler took power and they were forced into Lodz Ghetto. She married in 1944 and three weeks later she was taken to Auschwitz with her father and husband. Despite this, she considers herself the luckiest human being and adores every day of her life. “I’m not in a hurry”, she says. “The alternative doesn’t appeal to me”. She’s worked at Myer and has volunteered at Vision Australia and at NCJWA for many years.
