Bina was born in Poland, moved to Belgium at 5 and then to Paris when she was 7. She and her husband Arthur survived the war in the south of France, always on the move, with a combination of luck, false identity papers and more blind luck. She speaks Yiddish, French and English. In 1951 with 3 small children, she and Arthur arrived in Australia and settled in Regent near Preston. They were part of the Coburg Hebrew Congregation and formed the Preston National Council of Jewish Women group in 1953. They moved to St. Kilda in 1960 and joined the Alma Group of NCJWA (Vic), as well as B’nai Brith, JNF, United Israel Appeal and Jewish Care. She calls herself a survivor, a battler, a hard-worker, lucky to survive and lucky to belong. |
